THE IRON CRANE

A double definition hides a 5-letter answer — crack it before the edition closes.

EXHIBIT A — THE CIPHER

"Construction machine or long-necked wading bird (5)"

A single hand-crafted cryptic clue, filed every night at midnight. The case stays open until the edition closes — crack it while the evidence is fresh.

Two paths hide one answer: the definition and the wordplay. Find the tell — the indicator word that unlocks the cipher — and the answer emerges.

Read the clue

Every cryptic clue hides two paths to the same answer: a definition and a wordplay mechanism. Both are always there — the trick is seeing them both.

“Operatic voice — rearranged noter (5)”

II.
Crack the tell

One word is always the “tell” — an indicator revealing the device. Spot it, apply the mechanism, and the answer emerges. Use hints if you're stuck.

“rearranged” → anagram of NOTER = TENOR
